Aftercare in South Africa: Options, Costs & What to Look For
Updated 2026-07-11
School ends at 13:00–14:00; work doesn't. Aftercare is how most working South African families bridge the gap, and quality varies enormously.
The main options
- School-run aftercare. On the premises, no transport needed, usually the cheapest structured option. Quality depends entirely on staffing — ask who actually supervises and what the ratio is.
- Private aftercare centres. Often collect children from nearby schools, run homework sessions plus activities, and stay open later (17:30–18:00).
- Au pairs and childminders. More expensive per hour but flexible; sensible for multiple children or heavy extramural schedules.
- Extramural stacking. Some families chain sport and cultural activities to cover the afternoon — cheaper, but there's no homework supervision and lots of logistics.
Typical monthly costs (2026, indicative)
| Option | Typical range |
|---|---|
| School-run aftercare | R400 – R1,500 |
| Private aftercare centre (incl. transport) | R1,200 – R3,000 |
| Au pair (20 hrs/week) | R5,000 – R9,000 |
Confirm what's included: transport from school, lunch, holiday care and late pick-up fees are the usual extras.
Homework: supervised is not the same as helped
Ask precisely how homework works. 'They do homework' can mean a silent room with a matric student watching, or a structured session where an adult checks completed work against the school diary. If your child struggles academically, the difference is worth paying for.
Holiday care
School holidays are 12+ weeks a year — more than most parents' annual leave. Check whether your aftercare runs holiday programmes, what they cost (often charged separately), and whether they close over December entirely.
Questions to ask any aftercare
- What is the adult-to-child ratio, and who are the adults?
- How do you handle late pick-ups, and what does it cost?
- What happens on early-closing school days?
- Is transport from school in a properly licensed vehicle with seatbelts?
- Can I see the afternoon schedule for a typical week?
